Modification of the Icom 756 Classic transceiver (not the Pro, Pro-II, or Pro-III versions) involves adding an additional buffer amplifier after the first intermediate-frequency (IF) filter. This requires removing the bottom cover of the transceiver and mounting the buffer board in a suitable location at the RF-Unit section.<\/p>\n

In my case, I chose a ready-made board from SDR-KITS: Panoramic Adapter Tap (PAT70M) Board \u2013 Assembled \u2013 for 70 MHz IF Transceivers FT857, FT897, FT1000, IC703, IC706, IC756, IC7410, etc. Manufacturer: UK. HS Code: 8529902000.<\/p>\n

The key consideration is the signal tap point, located after the first IF filter.<\/p>\n

In the case of the ICOM 756 Classic, the most obvious choice appears to be the point marked on the attached PCB layout, between inductor L84 and IF filter FI81a. To make this connection possible, the RF-Unit board must be unscrewed and removed.<\/p>\n

Taking every precaution to keep the connection between the filter output and the buffer amplifier as short as possible, I decided to use 0.5 mm\u00b2 enamelled copper wire, routing it through a via next to the filter from the top side of the PCB and soldering it on the opposite side of the board.<\/p>\n

I connected the buffer’s Vin with the unused socket of external antenna tuner.<\/p>\n

The SMA-F connector was installed in a hole drilled beforehand in the transceiver’s enclosure.<\/p>\n

The software I utilize to display the waterfall is HDSDR.<\/p>\n

The configuration settings are quite important. Screenshots with relevant settings are attached below.<\/p>\n

Digital connection between transceiver & HDSDR is done with dyi CI-V cable.<\/p>\n
